Dave Robicheaux, his wife Molly and his friend Clete Purcel try to forget the trauma of Katrina by immersing themselves in the sumptuous and wild nature of Montana. During a fishing trip, Clete is attacked by two individuals who accuse him of having entered private property. One of them recognizes Clete: a sordid affair that goes back many years, but which Clete has never really managed to forget, the death of a pimp in a plane crash.
An unhealthy atmosphere quickly sets in: the two individuals keep crossing paths with Dave, Molly or Clete, and are always on the verge of triggering incidents. Their boss, Ridley Wellstone, is not a child at heart; this disfigured man is reactionary and greedy, representative of this “Scary America”.
In this context several horrific events occur, which apparently only have Wellstone’s henchmen in common. Coincidences? Prejudiced against these unpleasant Texans who don’t want to be liked? Clete and Dave agree to help the local sheriff, but Robicheaux has a lot to do to prevent his friend, more borderline than ever since his past unexpectedly resurfaced, from getting into increasingly serious trouble…
Beyond the issues of our time (ecology, wild capitalism, impunity), James Lee Burke’s new novel deals with the loss of innocence, the irruption of corruption at the very heart of Paradise. Splendor of a defiled virgin Nature. Deep sensitivity of Dave and Clete, violent past which resurfaces where you least expect it, fairly slow tempo which establishes a dense and evocative atmosphere, disturbing climate which settles insidiously… the powerful and hypnotic music of Swan Peak irresistibly reminiscent of Twin Peaks.
